Voipir Glacier.
The Voipir Glacier Trail — Voipir means “new snow” in the Mapuche language — is located in Villarrica National Park, on the volcano’s western slope. This hike is an excellent option to explore the base of Villarrica Volcano and its impressive glacier, while enjoying panoramic views of Llaima, Lonquimay, Sierra Nevada, and Mocho-Choshuenco volcanoes.
🌿 The hike begins through a magnificent native forest of coigüe, lenga, and ancient araucaria trees, before reaching an open volcanic area where the landscape transforms dramatically.
From there, we will reach the Voipir Glacier Viewpoint, a privileged spot offering sweeping panoramic views of Villarrica Volcano, the valley, and the glacier in the distance.
We will continue our journey through a fascinating volcanic landscape for approximately another 1 hour, until we reach the glacier’s ancient ice.
Depending on the time of year and trail conditions, we may be able to observe its impressive formations up close, including crevasses and ice arches.
Equipped with crampons, we will venture onto the glacier for an approximately 45-minute walk across the ice, exploring this unique natural environment and enjoying an unforgettable experience surrounded by an extraordinary glacial landscape.
Important seasonal information: During winter, spring, and late autumn, the trail may be fully or partially covered in snow, which can prevent us from seeing the glacier and accessing the ice. Depending on snow conditions and safety considerations, the excursion may be limited to the Voipir Glacier Viewpoint, shortening the hike by approximately 3 hours.
💪 This is an ideal adventure for mountain and nature lovers, combining native forests, panoramic volcano views, and the magic of glacier ice — all in one day.
